Livewire 4 for Laravel teams: what changes and how to upgrade

Livewire 4 makes reactive interfaces in Laravel faster and simpler. We looked at what actually changes for existing projects and put together an upgrade plan we use with clients.

Livewire has become our default choice for admin panels, client portals and internal tools built on Laravel. Version 4 keeps the same idea — interactive interfaces without a separate JavaScript front end — but changes enough under the hood to plan the upgrade carefully.

What gets better

  • Faster updates. Smarter rendering means fewer bytes over the wire and snappier screens with many components.
  • Simpler components. Less boilerplate for common patterns like forms, modals and tables.
  • Better developer experience. Clearer errors and tooling that make debugging less painful.

What to check before upgrading

  • Third-party packages that extend Livewire
  • Custom JavaScript hooks and Alpine.js integrations
  • Components that rely on deprecated lifecycle behaviour
  • Test coverage for the most important user flows

Our upgrade plan

We upgrade in a separate branch, run the automated tests, then click through the critical flows by hand: login, forms, payments, exports. For most projects the upgrade takes a few days; for large systems with many custom components, one to two weeks with QA.

We have collected the details in our documentation: Livewire migration guides for v3 and v4. If you would rather hand the upgrade over, our team does it as part of custom web app support.
